Alberta Kids Turn Yard Work Into Earnings Amid Teachers’ Strike

Post by : Mina Carter

The Alberta teachers’ strike has kept students out of classes for two weeks. For fourth-grader Mark Sakhenko, boredom set in after just two days.

From Homework to Yard Work

Mark, his younger sister, and two neighbours decided to trade in homework for rakes and leaves. The young entrepreneurs offer affordable leaf-raking services to neighbours.

“I’ve already made $400, so I’m hoping for $600 more,” said Mark.

Saving for a Special Trip

Rather than spending the money on toys, Mark has a bigger goal: “I am saving up for a ticket so I can go to Ukraine to see my grandma.” Mark and his family fled Ukraine four years ago, and he hasn’t seen his grandmother since.

Leaf Raking Continues

The crew says they will keep raking until the strike ends or they run out of leaves. For these students, the teachers’ strike has become an unexpected chance to earn, save, and contribute to their community.
