3 Indians Among 274 To Summit Mt Everest Set New Record

A historic new record was created on Mount Everest after 274 climbers, including three Indians, successfully reached the summit from the Nepal side in a single day. Officials in Nepal confirmed that this is the highest number of climbers ever to scale the world’s tallest mountain in one day from the southern route. The previous record was 223 climbers, set in 2019.

According to Nepal’s tourism authorities and expedition organizers, clear weather conditions helped climbers make the final push to the 8,848.86-meter summit. Mount Everest, located on the border of Nepal and China’s Tibet region, attracts hundreds of mountaineers every year during the short climbing season in May. This year, China did not open its side of Everest for climbers, making Nepal’s southern route the main path for expeditions.

Among the successful climbers were three Indians who joined the record-breaking summit wave along with mountaineers from several other countries. Nepal had issued nearly 500 permits for Everest climbs this season, including permits for many Indian climbers and expedition teams. Officials said more climbers may still reach the summit before the climbing season ends later this month.

The large number of climbers on the mountain also raised concerns about overcrowding in Everest’s dangerous “death zone,” where oxygen levels are extremely low. Images and reports from the mountain showed long lines of climbers waiting to move toward the summit. However, some expedition experts said proper planning, weather coordination, and oxygen support helped avoid major accidents during the record-setting day.

This climbing season has also seen several individual records. Famous Nepali Sherpa guide Kami Rita Sherpa extended his own world record after reaching the summit of Everest for the 32nd time. Another experienced climber, Pasang Dawa Sherpa, completed his 30th successful Everest summit. Veteran climber Lhakpa Sherpa also added another achievement by scaling Everest for the 11th time, the highest number by any woman in history.

Mount Everest remains one of the biggest challenges in mountaineering, attracting climbers from around the world despite the extreme weather, high altitude, and dangerous conditions. Nepal’s government earns millions of dollars each year from Everest climbing permits and tourism activities connected to the mountain. Officials are now expected to continue discussions about climber safety, overcrowding, and stricter rules for future expeditions.
