Zootopia 2 Breaks Records in China, Dominates Global Box Office

Zootopia 2 has become a major hit worldwide, with nearly half of its Wednesday-to-Sunday earnings coming from China. The animated sequel raked in $272 million in China alone, surpassing the record set by the original film in 2016 and marking it as the highest-grossing Hollywood animated movie ever in the country.

In North America, the film earned $156 million, topping the domestic box office. The story follows a determined bunny police officer and her clever fox partner as they solve mysteries in a city filled with talking animals, bringing humor, heart, and adventure to audiences of all ages.

Musical film Wicked: For Good also drew strong crowds, earning $92.2 million globally in its second weekend and reaching a total of $393.3 million in just 10 days.

The success of both films is a welcome boost for theaters heading into the holiday season, traditionally one of the busiest times of the year. Year-to-date ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada have reached $7.8 billion, slightly up from last year but still below pre-pandemic levels.

Industry analysts are optimistic that the momentum from recent releases, combined with marketing and trailers, will drive strong attendance through the rest of the year, including the upcoming release of the next Avatar film.
