Reports indicate that Chinese President Xi Jinping could be heading to North Korea as soon as next week, according to senior officials cited by South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency. This prospective visit is drawing significant attention globally as diplomatic talks involving North Korea, China, and the US heat up.

The report highlighted that Chinese security and protocol staff have recently been observed in Pyongyang, which raises expectations that preparations for a state visit by Xi are already in progress. Insights suggest that this trip might occur either in late May or early June.

Xi Jinping is anticipated to act as a mediator between North Korea's Kim Jong Un and former US President Donald Trump, according to the report. Analysts propose that China is likely to seek ways to ameliorate tensions and foster dialogue concerning North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and regional stability.

Donald Trump, after having engaged in three historic meetings with Kim during his first presidency, has recently expressed his openness to a renewed dialogue with the North Korean leader. He has consistently indicated that he has maintained a constructive personal rapport with Kim.

In response, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry has been cautious regarding the report, expressing hopes that interactions between China and North Korea will positively influence peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, yet avoided confirming Xi’s potential visit.

China stands as North Korea's primary economic and political ally. Their relationship had waned during the COVID-19 pandemic due to border closures and limited diplomatic engagements, but both nations are reportedly intent on re-establishing closer ties.

Last year, Kim Jong Un made a trip to Beijing and was seen alongside Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin during a significant military parade, highlighting the increasing strategic collaboration among the three nations.
