Canadian airline WestJet has announced a temporary fuel surcharge that will apply to certain flight bookings, as the company responds to rising jet fuel prices. The new charge will come into effect starting April 8, 2026, and will impact customers using companion vouchers.
According to the airline, the surcharge will be added to all bookings made with a companion voucher, a benefit offered to select credit card holders. The additional cost will appear under the “Other ATC” section during the booking process. However, bookings completed before the April 8 deadline will not be affected by this change.
The airline confirmed that the surcharge amount will be $60 per booking using a companion voucher. This decision has been made as fuel costs continue to rise, putting pressure on airline operations. Fuel is one of the largest expenses for airlines, and companies often adjust pricing strategies to manage these increases.
A company representative explained that the surcharge is being applied specifically to companion voucher bookings because these fares are fixed and cannot be adjusted as frequently as regular ticket prices. In contrast, standard fares can change multiple times a day depending on demand and market conditions, giving airlines more flexibility to manage costs.
The companion voucher allows travellers to bring a second passenger on the same trip at a reduced fare. It is typically offered to holders of certain travel credit cards and is renewed annually after meeting spending requirements. While it remains a popular benefit, the added surcharge may slightly increase the overall cost for users.
WestJet stated that the fuel surcharge is temporary and will be reviewed regularly. The airline plans to remove the extra charge once fuel prices return to more stable levels. This approach reflects how airlines adjust pricing during periods of economic fluctuation.
Other companies in the travel sector are also taking similar steps. For example, Air Canada Vacations has introduced a fixed surcharge on certain travel packages that include flights. This shows a wider trend across the industry as operators deal with increasing operational costs.
