In a poignant memorial service held in Nghe An province, Vietnam honored the remains of 80 volunteer soldiers and experts recently returned from Laos after many years. This deeply emotional event showcased the nation’s profound respect for those who laid down their lives in service to their country during operations in Laos.

The ceremony was conducted at the Nghi Loc Martyrs’ Cemetery with attendance by senior leaders, military personnel, provincial officials, and community members. Leading the tribute, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra offered incense to honor the sacrifices made by these soldiers, which were integral to Vietnam’s national liberation and international unity.

This recovery initiative is part of a longstanding collaborative program between Vietnam and Laos aimed at locating and repatriating the remains of soldiers who perished while aiding in the Lao revolution throughout the conflicts. This effort exemplifies the historic bond shared between the two countries.

During the dry season of 2025-2026, the Nghe An Provincial Military Command’s search and recovery team successfully recovered all 80 remains as part of its designated mission. Although the identities of the soldiers have yet to be established, officials declared the operation a complete success.

Leaders acknowledged the sacrifices made by the Vietnamese volunteers and experts who fought alongside the Lao populace in difficult wartime circumstances. They emphasized how the actions of these soldiers reinforced the unique friendship and solidarity that exists between Vietnam and Laos.

Officials also expressed appreciation for the Lao government and local communities for their enduring support in maintaining gravesites and assisting search teams in challenging terrains. The cooperation has resulted in the recovery of thousands of remains over the last forty years.

As reported, nearly 12,900 remains of Vietnamese soldiers and experts have been found in Laos to date, with many identified and returned to their families. This ongoing effort continues to bring closure to families searching for decades for news of their loved ones.

The burial service concluded with heartfelt emotions as delegates, soldiers, and citizens paid their respects by laying flowers and incense at the graves. The return of these fallen heroes during the significant month of May served as a poignant reminder of sacrifice, patriotism, and the lasting connection between Vietnam and Laos.
