Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez has pledged to continue releasing prisoners detained under the previous regime and described a recent phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump as positive and productive.
Rodríguez, who assumed leadership after Nicolás Maduro was captured earlier this month, reaffirmed her commitment to freeing more inmates in a speech that followed announcements that over 400 individuals had already been released, including some high-profile detainees.
The call with Trump — their first known conversation since the dramatic change in Venezuela’s leadership — focused on bilateral cooperation, with Trump praising Rodríguez as a “terrific person” and signalling a willingness to work with Caracas on issues such as oil, minerals and security.
Rodríguez framed the prisoner releases as part of a “new political moment” and said the process was ongoing, while also stressing the need for calm and unity within the country. Rights groups, however, have questioned the pace and transparency of the releases, noting that many political prisoners remain in detention.
The developments mark a noteworthy shift in U.S.–Venezuela engagement following the U.S. military operation that ousted Maduro, and underscore the evolving dynamics between Washington and Caracas amid efforts to stabilize the region.
