Ken Sim has announced plans to position Vancouver as a strong candidate for a future Major League Baseball expansion team, highlighting growing enthusiasm for the sport in Canada.
Speaking in a recent interview, Sim said there is significant excitement within the city council and among residents about the possibility of bringing a professional baseball franchise to Vancouver. He pointed to the recent success and popularity of the Toronto Blue Jays, especially their strong run last season, as evidence of increasing interest in baseball across the country.
The mayor confirmed that he plans to introduce a motion to city council on April 22 to begin preparing Vancouver for a potential expansion opportunity. While MLB has not officially announced expansion plans, Commissioner Rob Manfred has previously expressed interest in growing the league to 32 teams before the end of his tenure in 2029.
Sim emphasized the importance of being proactive, stating that cities must be ready when expansion opportunities arise. He said Vancouver aims to demonstrate that it is a credible and prepared location, capable of supporting a new franchise without delays or obstacles.
One of the key advantages highlighted by the mayor is Vancouver’s strategic location as a gateway to Asia, which could provide unique opportunities for MLB in terms of international growth and digital expansion. He believes this geographic position sets Vancouver apart from other cities competing for a team.
However, several important details still need to be finalized before any formal bid can move forward. The location of a potential stadium has not yet been decided, and the city is inviting interested investors to propose sites and funding plans. Sim made it clear that the city government will not provide public subsidies or tax breaks for the project.
Instead, the focus will be on attracting private partners who can demonstrate both financial capability and a clear vision for the team’s long-term success. The goal is to build a strong and credible proposal that aligns with MLB’s requirements.
Overall, Vancouver’s early efforts reflect a strategic attempt to enter the race for MLB expansion. While no final decision has been made by the league, the city is working to ensure it is fully prepared to compete if and when the opportunity becomes available.
