U.S. Shoots Down Iranian Drone Near Aircraft Carrier in Arabian Sea

Post by : Samiksha

The U.S. military has shot down an Iranian drone that was approaching the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, U.S. officials said on Feb. 3, 2026, as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high.

According to the U.S. Central Command, an F-35C fighter jet assigned to operations in the region intercepted and destroyed the Iranian Shahed-139 unmanned aerial vehicle after it came within proximity of the carrier strike group with “unclear intent,” prompting defensive action to protect the vessel and its crew. No U.S. personnel or equipment were reported injured or damaged during the engagement.

The incident reflects growing military friction between the U.S. and Iran, even as diplomatic contacts continue. U.S. officials have expanded military deployments in the Middle East over recent weeks, including numerous naval assets, citing the need to deter threats and safeguard strategic maritime routes.

In a related development, Iranian forces also harassed the U.S.-flagged merchant vessel M/V Stena Imperative in the Strait of Hormuz on the same day, attempting to approach or board the ship before it was escorted to safety by a U.S. Navy destroyer. That episode highlighted the volatile environment in key global shipping lanes.

The shootdown and maritime confrontation occurred amid ongoing discussions about nuclear diplomacy between the United States and Iran, with envoys planning talks aimed at addressing nuclear proliferation concerns. Despite these diplomatic efforts, the military encounter has underscored the challenges of managing regional tensions.

U.S. officials have characterised the drone’s takedown as a self-defence measure under existing rules of engagement, underlining their position that potential threats to personnel and vessels will be met with decisive action. Iran has not publicly acknowledged the specific shootdown, but tensions with Western powers continue to shape security dynamics across the Middle East.
