Britain announced on Saturday that two Royal Air Force aircraft conducted a 12-hour joint mission earlier this week alongside U.S. and NATO forces to patrol the Russian border. The operation comes amid a series of recent Russian drone and aircraft incursions into NATO airspace.

Joint Operation Highlights NATO Unity

“This was a substantial joint mission with our U.S. and NATO allies,” said Defense Minister John Healey. He added that the operation not only provided valuable intelligence to enhance the operational awareness of the Armed Forces but also “sends a powerful message of NATO unity to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and our adversaries.”

Aircraft and Mission Details

The mission involved an RC-135 Rivet Joint electronic surveillance aircraft and a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol plane, flying from the Arctic region past Belarus and Ukraine. The aircraft were supported by a U.S. Air Force KC-135 refueling plane.

Russian Incursions and EU Defense Plans

Britain noted that the operation followed recent incursions into the airspaces of NATO countries, including Poland, Romania, and Estonia. Earlier this month, European Union leaders endorsed plans to strengthen the bloc’s defenses against Russian drones, highlighting growing concern over aerial threats in the region.
