In Indonesia, shocking revelations have come to light following the circulation of chat messages believed to involve students from the University of Indonesia, spurring public outrage and urgent discussions about campus safety in relation to sexual harassment.
Screenshots surfaced from group chats featuring 16 law students, filled with explicit language, crude jokes, and the objectification of female classmates and educators. The content rapidly went viral on social media, prompting widespread condemnation.
In the aftermath, students organized a forum at the campus in Depok, articulating their anger and pressing for accountability from the implicated individuals, many of whom are said to be affiliated with student organizations.
The university’s student central organization, BEM UI, has called for decisive measures, including ethics hearings and potential expulsions for those involved. They have also urged university leaders to investigate this incident alongside other unaddressed sexual violence allegations.
In response, the university confirmed it has initiated an internal investigation through its anti-sexual violence task force and has taken preliminary steps by revoking the organizational roles of several implicated students.
The administration announced that if violations are substantiated, disciplinary actions could extend to academic penalties up to expulsion, with the possibility of involving law enforcement if criminal behavior is identified.
This incident has reignited broader conversations surrounding campus safety, respect between genders, and the pressing need for improved frameworks to combat sexual misconduct within educational institutions.
Students and activists are now advocating for comprehensive reforms, stricter enforcement of existing policies, and heightened awareness to create safer campus environments for everyone.
