Two Injured In Calgary Crash Amid Dangerous Road Conditions

Two people were taken to hospital, including one in critical condition, after a serious crash in Calgary early Monday morning, as officials warned of dangerous road conditions caused by winter weather. The incident has raised fresh concerns about driver safety as icy surfaces continue to impact travel across the city.

According to police, the crash happened around 6:40 a.m. on Crowchild Trail N.W. near University Drive. A vehicle fell nearly 25 feet from an overpass onto the road below, landing upside down. Authorities said the car had collided with another vehicle before breaking through a traffic barrier and plunging onto the northbound lanes.

Investigators reported that a white Toyota Corolla, driven by a man in his 30s, struck the rear of a Toyota Yaris driven by a woman in her 40s. A female passenger in the Corolla suffered life-threatening injuries, while the driver also sustained serious injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was not hurt. Police said there is no evidence that alcohol or drugs were involved, but they are examining whether speed combined with poor road conditions played a role.

Officials described the roads as extremely hazardous at the time of the crash. A police officer at the scene said the surface was covered in ice, making driving conditions very dangerous. Weather alerts from Environment Canada warned of freezing drizzle and fog, which can create thin layers of ice that are difficult for drivers to see.

The crash was not an isolated incident. Police reported several other collisions across the city the same morning. In one case, six vehicles, including two school buses, were involved in a crash that sent three children to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

City officials have urged drivers to remain cautious despite the calendar showing spring. A spokesperson for the City of Calgary emphasized that winter-like conditions can still occur in April, especially with freezing drizzle that quickly turns roads and sidewalks slippery.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash while reminding motorists to slow down, maintain safe distances, and adjust driving habits according to weather conditions.
