Donald Trump has removed Pam Bondi from her position as U.S. Attorney General, marking another major change in the leadership of the Justice Department. The decision came after months of growing criticism over her performance, especially her handling of sensitive investigations and political cases.
In a social media announcement, Trump said Bondi would leave the role and move into a private-sector position. He also confirmed that Todd Blanche, who was serving as Deputy Attorney General, will take over as acting head of the department while a permanent replacement is considered.
Bondi later stated that she would help with a smooth transition over the coming weeks before stepping into her new role. However, she did not provide details about her next position. Her departure ends a controversial tenure during which she played a highly visible and loyal role in supporting Trump’s administration.
One of the biggest challenges Bondi faced was criticism over the Justice Department’s handling of files related to Jeffrey Epstein. The case drew strong reactions, especially from conservative groups who expected major revelations. Earlier claims about a possible “client list” linked to Epstein were later denied by the department, leading to public confusion and backlash.
In addition to the Epstein issue, Bondi was also under pressure for launching investigations into several political figures seen as critics of Trump. These included high-profile individuals such as James Comey and John Brennan. Some of these legal efforts were later dismissed in court, raising concerns about the use of the Justice Department for political purposes.
Critics argued that Bondi’s actions weakened the independence of the Justice Department, which traditionally operates separately from political influence. Lawmakers and legal experts said the department appeared to be used to target political opponents rather than focus on neutral law enforcement.
Supporters of Bondi, however, defended her record. They said she worked to address issues such as illegal immigration and violent crime, and aimed to restore trust among those who believed the department had been biased in previous administrations. Bondi herself rejected claims of politicization and maintained that her decisions were based on law and evidence.
Her removal continues a pattern of frequent leadership changes within the Justice Department under Trump. Several previous officials in similar roles have either resigned or been replaced after disagreements or performance concerns.
With Blanche now serving as acting Attorney General, attention will turn to how the department moves forward and whether it will shift its approach to investigations and internal operations.
