Trump Bars Nvidia’s Blackwell AI Chip Exports Amid China Concerns

US President Donald Trump has stated that Nvidia’s highly advanced Blackwell AI chip will not be made available to foreign countries, in a move that underscores growing national security concerns over China’s technological rise.

Nvidia, currently the world’s most valuable chipmaker, leads the global market in artificial intelligence processors. The Blackwell chip, described by Trump as “10 years ahead of every other chip,” is seen as critical to advancing AI systems and computing power.

Questions have emerged since Trump’s comments in August on whether a scaled-down version of the chip might be sold to China. However, the latest remarks, made aboard Air Force One, indicate a firm stance against exporting the technology: “We don’t give that chip to other people,” Trump said.

The potential sale of the Blackwell chip to Chinese companies had sparked criticism from US lawmakers, who argue it would significantly bolster China’s military and AI capabilities. Representative John Moolenaar compared such an act to “giving Iran weapons-grade uranium.”

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently said the company had not applied for US export licenses for China, citing Beijing’s opposition. He also highlighted China as a crucial market necessary to support U.S.-based research and development.

Meanwhile, Nvidia confirmed it will supply over 260,000 Blackwell chips to South Korea’s major technology firms, including Samsung Electronics, marking significant global demand for its next-generation AI hardware.
