Trump Advocates for US Ownership of Greenland to Counter Rival Influence

US President Donald Trump has expressed the need for the United States to take ownership of Greenland in order to prevent Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. He contended that merely leasing land or depending on defense agreements will not suffice for sustainable security, asserting that ownership is essential for comprehensive protection.

While addressing the media in Washington, Trump stated that the US would secure Greenland either “the easy way” or “the hard way,” prompting concern amongst American allies. According to him, Greenland's strategic importance is vital for national security, especially for tracking missile threats and military activities between North America and Europe.

Greenland is home to a longstanding US military base at Pituffik, where American troops have been stationed since World War II. Under current agreements with Denmark, the US can increase troop presence on the island as necessary. However, Trump claimed these arrangements are insufficient, maintaining that nations need to own land to effectively defend it.

Danish and Greenlandic officials responded strongly to Trump’s statements, emphasizing that Greenland is not for sale. They cautioned that any attempt to acquire the territory would seriously jeopardize trans-Atlantic relationships and potentially harm NATO cohesion. The political leaders of Greenland assert that their future decisions should be in the hands of the Greenlandic populace alone.

Numerous NATO allies, including significant European nations and Canada, declared support for Denmark. They underlined that Arctic security should be collaboratively maintained by allies while honoring international law, sovereignty, and territorial borders as outlined in the UN Charter.

Interest in Greenland has surged in recent years due to its rich natural resources, such as rare earth minerals, uranium, and potential oil and gas reserves. Climate change has facilitated access to these resources by melting ice, thereby enhancing the island’s strategic significance on a global scale.

Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland has re-ignited global discussions, with detractors warning that such remarks could raise tensions and undermine established alliances.
