Threat Calls Target Jhalmuri Seller After PM Modi's Visit

A jhalmuri vendor from Jhargram, West Bengal, reported receiving death threats from anonymous callers following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to his snack stall during an election campaign earlier this year.

The vendor, Vikram Sao, mentioned that the threats began soon after Modi's appearance at his shop on April 19, during which their brief exchange caught significant attention on social media.

According to Sao, he has been inundated with multiple phone and video calls from international numbers believed to be tied to Pakistan and Bangladesh. The callers have made chilling threats against him and his family, including warnings of potential bomb attacks.

Sao recounted that some threats were amplified by video calls where the callers displayed weapons and menacing gestures. They have also sent alarming WhatsApp messages detailing their intentions of harm.

While the callers haven’t explicitly mentioned PM Modi, Sao is convinced that the threats arose following the widespread media coverage of the Prime Minister’s visit and his interaction with him.

During his campaign stop, Modi was captured on video asking Sao to prepare the traditional snack made of puffed rice, onions, chilies, and mustard oil. The Prime Minister insisted on paying for the food despite Sao’s reluctance to accept money.

In response to the threats, local authorities have reportedly intensified security measures for Sao and his family. Police presence has been increased near their home, while investigations are underway to trace the source of the threatening calls and messages.

Officials have commenced a formal inquiry to identify the individuals behind the threats and to ascertain whether the calls are legitimate or part of a larger scheme to intimidate. This incident raises alarms about the risks of online intimidation and the dangers faced by ordinary citizens arising from political exposure.

Social media has seen an uptick in discussions surrounding this case, with users vocally supporting Sao and urging prompt action against the culprits issuing threats.
