Ayushmann’s Thamma Earns ₹25 Cr on Diwali Box Office Day 1

Aditya Sarpotdar’s vampire romance Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, opened in theatres this Diwali and became the third-highest Hindi opener of 2025. Despite stiff competition and comparisons with last year’s blockbuster Stree 2, the film managed to create a strong first-day impact at the box office.

Thamma collects ₹25.11 crore worldwide on the opening day.

Releasing a day after Diwali, when schools and offices remained closed, Thamma earned ₹24 crore initially, with the official worldwide figure later confirmed by the makers as ₹25.11 crore (NBOC).

The makers celebrated the milestone with a statement:

“It’s a Diwali Thammaka for the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe! Thamma opens with a bang – ₹25.11 Cr NBOC on Day 1! Now the third-highest opener for Maddock Films and second-highest in the MHCU, right after Stree 2. The madness is real, the numbers speak louder!”

Ayushmann Khurrana’s highest-ever opening

The film marks Ayushmann Khurrana’s biggest opening to date. Expressing his gratitude, the actor said:

“I’m an entertainer, so it brings me immense joy to see people enjoying Thamma during Diwali. Having carved a niche with my quirky films, I was waiting for an opportunity to release a big film on Diwali — a festival that traditionally belongs to superstars. Thamma is the tentpole film of my career.”

Comparison with Stree 2 and MHCU rankings

While Thamma’s Day 1 figures are impressive, they fall short of Amar Kaushik’s Stree 2, which collected ₹51.80 crore on its opening day in 2024. The Rajkummar Rao–Shraddha Kapoor film also earned another ₹8.50 crore from paid previews.

Within the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), Thamma ranks as the second-highest opener, following Stree 2 and surpassing Bhediya, Stree, and Munjya.

Box office momentum and future outlook

Although Thamma has received mixed reviews, the buzz around the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe is expected to help it maintain steady collections in the coming days. Similar patterns were seen with Aditya Sarpotdar’s previous directorial, Munjya, which opened at ₹4 crore but ended its domestic run above ₹100 crore.

With strong family audience turnout, Diwali holidays, and positive word-of-mouth, trade experts predict Thamma could cross the ₹100 crore mark within its first week if momentum continues.

Thamma ranks third among 2025 Hindi film openers.

So far, Thamma holds the third-highest Hindi film opening of 2025, trailing behind:

  • Chhaava – ₹31 crore (Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna)

  • Sikandar – ₹26 crore (Salman Khan)

  • Thamma – ₹25.11 crore (Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna)

  • Housefull 5 – ₹24 crore (Akshay Kumar)

Verdict: A promising Diwali start for Ayushmann

Despite not matching Stree 2’s historic numbers, Thamma has successfully delivered a festive blockbuster opening. It cements Ayushmann Khurrana’s position as a mainstream box-office draw and strengthens the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe as one of Bollywood’s most successful cinematic brands.
