Thailand is set to enhance its regional flight offerings, with the government aiming to revitalize local economies and bolster tourism in smaller cities throughout the nation.
Deputy Minister of Transport Phatarapong Pataraprasit led a crucial meeting with high-ranking aviation officials and representatives from the Thai Airlines Association to outline support initiatives for airlines operating in regional airports under the Department of Airports.
The government is eager to tap into the potential at airports located in the northern, northeastern, and southern regions of Thailand, many of which have recently increased their capacity to handle more travelers and operations. Authorities anticipate that enhancing regional air connectivity will promote a more balanced distribution of tourism revenue across the nation.
During the discussions, Phatarapong urged airlines to establish new domestic and international routes, both regular and charter, stating that improved flight accessibility would enhance convenience for travelers and foster economic progress in less populous areas.
The Department of Airports noted the positive outcomes from earlier aviation promotion initiatives launched in 2025; airlines such as Thai Lion Air, Thai Vietjet Air, and Thai AirAsia introduced several new routes, including services to Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Buriram, and Narathiwat.
With these successes in mind, authorities are contemplating a continuation of these promotional measures and looking into additional support for international routes, along with enhancements to airport facilities and strategies to lower operating costs for airlines, aiming to stimulate passenger interest from both domestic and international travelers.
The meeting also examined how the current Middle East tensions are impacting the aviation sector. Airports of Thailand has responded to the crisis by announcing a 50 percent decrease in aircraft parking fees at its airports for a duration of six months, starting from June 1, 2026.
Officials reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fortifying Thailand’s aviation landscape while ensuring that travelers have access to affordable and convenient air travel options that support not only tourism but also trade and economic growth in various regions.
