Thailand is accelerating its cultural diplomacy efforts as Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul engages in vital discussions with Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz at UNESCO's Paris headquarters. The conversations primarily aimed at enhancing collaboration in areas of cultural heritage, education, sustainable tourism, and the global elevation of Thailand's soft power.
During the dialogue, Thailand emphasized the intention to promote its “Thai Traditional Dress” for inclusion on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Officials articulated that this initiative is crucial for safeguarding the nation's cultural identity while showcasing the artistry of textile-making and the historical significance of Thai attire to a global audience.
Ratchada Thanadirek, the government spokesperson, indicated that this nomination also honors the contributions of Queen Sirikit, who has been instrumental in preserving Thai silk, fabrics, and traditional designs on the international stage. Thai officials believe that gaining UNESCO recognition would significantly enhance global awareness of Thailand's rich intangible cultural heritage.
The talks also placed considerable emphasis on sustainable tourism collaboration, where UNESCO officials commended Thailand’s ongoing efforts to reconcile tourism growth with the safeguarding of cultural heritage sites and natural resources. Currently, Thailand boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and continues to focus on conservation alongside economic growth.
Prime Minister Anutin expressed optimism about the potential for Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan to be considered for UNESCO World Heritage Site status during the upcoming 48th session of the World Heritage Committee, which is set to take place in South Korea later this year.
Additional discussions included prospective educational partnerships, such as a significant Global Education Meeting planned for 2027. Officials noted that these interactions reflect the burgeoning collaboration between Thailand and UNESCO in promoting education, science, cultural exchanges, and sustainable development initiatives.
UNESCO’s Director-General praised Thailand’s proactive stance in international collaboration and acknowledged the growing involvement of Thailand’s private sector in projects related to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation.
