In a pivotal move, Thailand is embarking on an ambitious strategy to bolster its cooperative sector as part of a broader development blueprint aimed for 2026. The initiative was led by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Piyarat Tiyapairat, who presided over discussions aimed at enhancing the functionality and sustainability of cooperatives nationwide.

The National Cooperative Development Committee convened to emphasize the establishment of a robust, transparent, and sustainable cooperative framework. Participants from various sectors contributed thoughtful insights and ideas to shape upcoming policies.

Central to the meeting's priorities was the integration of digital technology. The government plans to refine applications and websites for improved accessibility and user-friendliness, creating a system that empowers cooperative members to efficiently access necessary services.

A key component of the initiative is enhanced data sharing across government agencies. By linking systems and fostering innovation, the government seeks to strengthen decision-making capabilities and service delivery. Collaboration with educational and research entities is expected to yield new technologies tailored to farmers' and cooperatives’ needs.

Debt resolution also emerged as a critical focus. The government aims to assist numerous cooperative members in managing and alleviating debt, which should foster greater financial stability and improve living standards for many families.

The 2026 roadmap aligns with the 5th Cooperative Development Plan, covering 2023 to 2027. Notably, many projects under this plan are already underway, reflecting meaningful progress toward established objectives.

In the upcoming year, the government plans to enhance struggling cooperatives by reinforcing management structures and promoting transparency. Technology will play a crucial role in auditing and governance, ensuring superior accountability.

Additionally, the strategy emphasizes promoting ethical conduct among cooperative staff and extending support to numerous cooperatives and farmer collectives. The government aims to cultivate high-performing model cooperatives that can inspire others.

Currently, Thailand boasts over nine thousand cooperatives with countless members, particularly in agriculture. These entities significantly contribute to the national economy through lending, deposits, and agricultural services.

The meeting acknowledged several national cooperative federations instrumental in advancing the sector. Officials express confidence that robust government collaboration and the adoption of digital innovation will further sustain and develop Thailand's cooperative system.
