A major technical failure during Sydney’s famous Vivid Sydney festival shocked thousands of spectators after nearly 90 drones suddenly fell from the sky and crashed into Darling Harbour during a live nighttime performance. Dramatic videos of the incident quickly spread across social media, showing drones breaking formation before plunging into the water and nearby boardwalk areas. Organizers later confirmed that future performances of the popular drone show were immediately cancelled while safety investigations continue.

The incident happened Monday evening during the “Star-Bound” drone show at Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour. Eyewitnesses standing near the harbour said the sound of drones crashing onto the marina and water was clearly audible from several meters away. Despite the frightening situation, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported because the drones mainly fell within a designated exclusion safety zone created around the event area.

Following the incident, organizers immediately cancelled the later Monday night performance along with all scheduled drone shows for Tuesday and Wednesday. The Vivid Sydney drone show had only recently returned after being cancelled last year due to crowd management and safety concerns. Festival organizers had promoted the 2026 event as one of Australia’s biggest aerial drone displays, featuring specially designed drones operating in complex synchronized patterns above Sydney Harbour. The latest failure has now raised fresh questions about the safety and reliability of large-scale drone entertainment events.
