Motorists in Ottawa are being advised to prepare for traffic delays as summer lane closures come into effect on Highway 417 starting Monday. The closures are part of ongoing construction work under the Rapid Bridge Replacement project, which aims to upgrade key infrastructure along the busy route.
The construction is being carried out by Kiewit Dufferin Midtown Partnership (KDMP), under the direction of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. According to officials, the rightmost eastbound lane on Highway 417 will be closed between Carling Avenue and the Rochester Avenue off-ramp.
In addition to this closure, drivers can expect intermittent lane and ramp closures in both eastbound and westbound directions between Island Park Drive and Kent Street. Traffic flow in the area will be adjusted through staged construction zones, which may further slow down commute times, especially during peak hours.
The work is expected to continue until late summer. During this period, crews will focus on several upgrades, including replacing the noise barrier wall along the highway. Other planned improvements include repairs to surrounding streets, drainage system upgrades, electrical work, and resurfacing of retaining walls.
This project is part of a broader effort that began in 2021 to replace aging overpasses along the Queensway, one of Ottawa’s most important transportation corridors. Officials say the upgrades are necessary to improve road safety, traffic efficiency, and long-term infrastructure reliability.
Authorities are encouraging drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes where possible. Clear signage and traffic management measures will be in place to guide motorists safely through construction zones.
