Starlink, the satellite internet initiative by SpaceX, is making vital preparations for its launch in India, establishing nine ground stations in key cities such as Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow. These stations are essential for Starlink’s efforts to introduce satellite internet access throughout the country.
The company has sought approval for 600 gigabits per second capacity over India utilizing its Gen 1 satellite constellation. Officials noted that this bandwidth has been provisionally allocated to enable Starlink to meet national security guidelines.
Security Protocols and Trials
Due to the sensitive nature of satellite communications, the Indian authorities have enforced stringent regulations. Starlink has secured temporary authorization to utilize specific radio frequencies for testing its systems and to import 100 satellite terminals for preliminary, non-commercial testing.
Key stipulations include:
Ground stations will be operated solely by Indian nationals until foreign personnel receive the necessary security clearance.
All test-related data must be stored within India.
Authorities must be regularly informed of all equipment and operational details.
Starlink joins OneWeb and Jio Satellite as the third company authorized to perform security-centered trials. Full commercial services will commence only after receiving the green light from security agencies.
Previous Issues with Unauthorized Devices
This year, reports emerged of illegal Starlink devices being utilized in sensitive border regions, including Manipur and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Elon Musk clarified these claims, affirming that Starlink services over India had been disabled.
With these initiatives, Starlink is meticulously preparing for a compliant market entry, merging innovation in satellite internet with India’s security demands.
