Shelter Order Lifted After NWT Shooting Incident

Post by : Sophia Matthew

A shelter-in-place order issued in the Northwest Territories community of Behchokǫ̀ was lifted Friday evening after police arrested several individuals connected to a reported shooting incident. The lockdown remained in place for most of the day as RCMP officers searched for armed suspects believed to be involved in what authorities described as a targeted attack.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), officers responded after receiving reports of gunfire and armed individuals in the community earlier in the day. Police initially believed up to six suspects were involved, leading authorities to declare a critical incident and order residents to remain indoors for safety reasons.

The emergency measures caused major disruptions across the community. Schools, public buildings, and local services were locked down for several hours while officers carried out search operations. At Chief Jimmy Bruneau School, students remained inside long after normal dismissal time as staff worked to keep children safe and calm during the ongoing police operation. Meals were reportedly delivered to students while the lockdown continued.

Police deployed a large emergency response operation in Behchokǫ̀, involving RCMP emergency response teams, dog units, drone support, crime reduction officers, and additional backup personnel. Authorities also established a checkpoint outside the community as they searched for suspects connected to the shooting reports.

By Friday evening, RCMP announced that the shelter-in-place order had officially been lifted after investigators completed further risk assessments. Police stated they believed it was safe for residents to return to normal activities, although officers would continue maintaining a visible presence in the area while the investigation remains active.

Authorities confirmed that several people had been arrested during the operation, but officials did not immediately release the exact number of suspects taken into custody or provide detailed information about possible charges. Police also did not confirm whether all suspects connected to the incident had been located.

RCMP said there were no reports of injuries linked to the incident. Investigators currently believe the case was a targeted attack rather than a random threat to the public. However, police urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity or information related to the investigation.

The incident created concern across the Northwest Territories, especially because Behchokǫ̀ is one of the region’s largest Indigenous communities. Residents spent several tense hours waiting for updates as heavily armed officers moved through the area during the search operation. Local leaders and community members later thanked emergency responders and school staff for helping protect residents during the lockdown.

Police say the investigation is still ongoing and more information could be released in the coming days as officers continue examining evidence and interviewing witnesses connected to the case.
