A serious moment took place in the upper house of government on Wednesday afternoon when a senator suddenly collapsed during a speech.
The incident happened around 4 p.m. when the senator stood up to speak about a very controversial government bill. Just as he began, he was heard saying “Oh sh**t” and then fell to the side, landing on the floor. People nearby quickly rushed to help him.
The session’s speaker immediately paused the meeting, and the debate was suspended for about 20 minutes. Paramedics were called, and the senator was checked on the spot. Later, it was confirmed that he was recovering and appeared to be doing better.
The bill that was being discussed is known as Bill C-5. It is about making it easier and faster for the government to approve big projects like construction or energy developments. But many Indigenous groups and environmental organizations strongly disagree with the bill. They believe it does not protect people’s rights and could harm the environment.
Even though there are many voices of concern, the bill has already passed through the lower house of government, with both major political parties supporting it. It was also reviewed early by the upper house before this debate.
The moment was a reminder of how intense and emotional political debates can become, especially when the topic deeply affects people and the land.
