Honoring Selena's Legacy: A New Documentary Premieres on Netflix

Post by : Mina Carter

Three decades after the tragic loss of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, the revered Queen of Tejano music, her legacy remains vibrant. A new documentary titled Selena Y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, directed by Isabel Castro and produced by her siblings, Suzette and AB Quintanilla III, aims to highlight this legacy. The documentary is set to debut on Netflix this Monday.

“Who better to narrate our journey than us?” expresses Suzette Quintanilla, underlining the importance of sharing their family perspective.

The project originated when the Quintanillas reached out to Castro, impressed by her work on the film Mija in 2022. “Suzette and I clicked right away,” Castro shares. “We both understand being older sisters navigating our Mexican American heritage.”

This heartfelt documentary employs the family's vast archive, which Suzette lovingly refers to as “the vault.” Over the years, Castro and the Quintanilla family reviewed DVDs, VHS tapes, raw film canisters, and digital formats to curate the most compelling footage that reflects not just Selena's fame, but her essence as a sister, daughter, and friend.

Among the treasured artifacts are personal home videos captured by Suzette, a heartfelt letter penned by Selena to her husband Chris Pérez, and cherished memories from the band’s first tour bus, Big Bertha. Notably, Marcella Quintanilla, Selena’s mother, who has seldom spoken publicly, shares intimate memories and photographs for the first time.

Castro remarks that this documentary offered a chance to portray Selena as a young woman instead of merely a cultural figure. “Watching the home videos reminded me how young she was at just 23,” she notes.

Though Selena's life and untimely passing have been explored in earlier projects, including the 1997 biopic featuring Jennifer Lopez and a 2020 Netflix series, this documentary deliberately steers clear of her tragic murder. “We don’t dwell on that. This film is a tribute to a Latina’s happiness and strength. It’s about her journey, our journey, our growth together,” Castro affirms.

The film shines a light on often overlooked facets of Selena’s life: her bilingual talents, bicultural experiences, ascent in the music realm, and her marriage to Pérez, which sparked family tensions at the time. The storytelling is enriched solely through interviews with the Quintanilla family and members of Los Dinos, providing a deeply personal side without external commentary.

Suzette expresses her hope that the film resonates with Latino audiences and young dreamers. “It continues her legacy, our legacy,” she states. “We hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams unapologetically.”

Selena Y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy is a tribute to life, music, and the everlasting impact of an icon whose influence remains profound across generations.
