On Monday, a substantial 7.4-magnitude earthquake rattled northern Japan, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency, resulting in a tsunami alert for nearby coastal zones.
The quake struck at 4:53 PM local time (0753 GMT) in the Pacific Ocean, off the shores of Iwate Prefecture. Tremors were felt as far away as Tokyo, miles from the epicenter.
In the aftermath, officials warned of potential tsunami waves reaching up to three meters (10 feet) along the northern shoreline. They indicated that initial waves could make landfall quite rapidly.
Authorities have urged individuals living in coastal and riverside zones to evacuate without delay, suggesting they seek higher ground or designated shelters. They also cautioned that tsunami waves could arrive in successive surges, recommending that people remain safe until the alert is officially canceled.
The Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed the formation of a crisis management team to oversee the ongoing situation and coordinate emergency responses.
Japan ranks among the most seismically active nations globally, situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where several major tectonic plates converge. The nation faces about 1,500 tremors each year, comprising nearly 18% of global seismic activity.
While most seismic events in Japan tend to be minor, stronger quakes can inflict serious destruction, depending on their depth and location. The catastrophic 9.0-magnitude earthquake in 2011 led to a devastating tsunami, resulting in approximately 18,500 fatalities and a nuclear crisis at Fukushima.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely and have emphasized the importance of adhering to official safety guidelines.
