Search For American Tourist's Body In Banff Waterfall Continues: RCMP

Search and rescue teams continue working in Banff National Park as authorities search for the body of an American tourist believed to have fallen into a powerful waterfall earlier this week. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said difficult terrain and dangerous water conditions are making recovery efforts extremely challenging.

According to officials, emergency crews were first called to the area after reports that a tourist had fallen into the fast-moving water near one of the park’s waterfalls. Witnesses told authorities the individual lost footing near the edge before being swept away by the strong current.

Parks Canada staff, RCMP officers, and specialized rescue teams quickly launched a large-scale search operation shortly after the incident was reported. Crews used boats, drones, helicopters, and ground teams to search nearby waterways and surrounding areas inside the national park.

Authorities later confirmed that the missing individual is an American tourist visiting Banff National Park. However, officials have not publicly released the person’s identity while family members continue to be notified.

RCMP stated that search efforts have continued despite extremely difficult conditions in the area. Strong water flow, cold temperatures, slippery rocks, and deep sections of the river have complicated rescue operations and limited access for emergency crews.

Officials also warned visitors to remain cautious around rivers, waterfalls, and cliff areas inside Banff National Park, especially during spring and early summer when snowmelt increases water levels and current strength. Parks Canada has repeatedly reminded tourists that even popular sightseeing areas can become dangerous within seconds.

Witnesses near the scene described seeing emergency helicopters and rescue workers searching along the riverbanks for several hours after the incident. Some sections of nearby trails were temporarily restricted while rescue teams carried out operations in the area.

Banff National Park is one of Canada’s most visited tourist destinations and attracts millions of visitors each year because of its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and hiking trails. However, park officials say accidents involving water currents, hiking falls, and wildlife encounters still occur despite safety warnings.

Authorities said the search operation remains active and will continue as conditions allow. RCMP and Parks Canada officials expressed sympathy for the tourist’s family and said updates will be provided if new information becomes available.
