In New Brunswick, police are looking into two RCMP officers who may have interfered with an impaired-driving case. The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is leading the investigation.

What Took Place

In February, a man was arrested for impaired driving near Henderson Settlement, about 60 km southeast of Fredericton. In June, local RCMP learned that one officer from the Sussex detachment, who knew the driver, may have tried to affect the case. Around the same time, another officer from the Caledonia detachment is also accused of intervening.

Why This Is Important

SiRT, an independent agency, handles allegations where police may misuse power. If there’s proof these officers tried to influence the impaired-driving investigation, they could face criminal charges or employment consequences.

What Happens Next

  • SiRT will collect evidence, interview people, and decide whether charges are warranted.

  • If charges are laid, the officers could be prosecuted or disciplined.

  • Otherwise, SiRT will close the case if no wrongdoing is found.

Why Independence Matters

Independent reviews by SiRT help ensure trust in police work—making sure officers don’t use their authority to protect friends or hide mistakes. This promotes fairness and accountability in the justice system.
