Scaloni Shares Hopeful Update on Messi's Injury Status

Post by : Shakul

Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni has delivered an optimistic outlook on Lionel Messi's fitness, easing concerns over the football star's injury just before the FIFA World Cup. Scaloni mentioned that the earlier assessments of Messi's situation are “not that bad” and expressed optimism that upcoming medical assessments will affirm this promising news.

Messi encountered muscle fatigue in his left hamstring during a thrilling 6-4 win for Inter Miami over Philadelphia in Major League Soccer. The Argentine captain had to exit the match in the 73rd minute, leading to worries regarding his availability shortly before the World Cup kicks off.

At 38, Messi is gearing up for what could be his sixth World Cup, remaining a pivotal figure for Argentina as the reigning champions strive to defend the trophy they claimed in Qatar four years ago.

In a conversation with Argentine channel DSports, Scaloni acknowledged that while the coaching staff wished for no injury issues, they believe the current circumstances are manageable. He added that further tests will clarify Messi’s health in the coming days.

Scaloni shared that he was observing the Inter Miami match from the Argentine Football Association's headquarters and felt relieved that Messi opted to leave the pitch voluntarily rather than risking further injury. Inter Miami's coach Guillermo Hoyos later noted that heavy field conditions and fatigue contributed to this choice.

Inter Miami released a statement indicating that Messi's return to full training would depend on his recovery and medical assessments, although no specific timeline for his return or World Cup readiness has been established.

Argentina's FIFA World Cup journey is set to commence on June 16 against Algeria in Kansas City, followed by matches against Austria on June 22 and Jordan on June 28 during the group stages.

Ahead of the World Cup, Argentina will participate in two international friendlies in the U.S., facing Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9. These games are anticipated to help the coaching staff evaluate player fitness and finalize preparations.

While Messi hasn’t officially declared his intention to participate in the 2026 World Cup, it’s widely anticipated that he will aim for a record-equalling sixth appearance, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa who are also expected to reach this milestone.
