Premier Moe Supports Prime Minister Carney's Visit to China

Saskatchewan's Premier Scott Moe has expressed his support for Prime Minister Mark Carney's imminent trip to China, labeling it a crucial step towards tackling trade challenges impacting Canadian farmers.

Moe stated his satisfaction with Carney's upcoming discussions in China, especially regarding the significant Chinese tariffs imposed on Canadian canola products. He hopes these negotiations will enhance market access for the vital canola crop that has endured restrictions for several months.

At present, China levies a 76 per cent tariff on Canadian canola seed, perceived as a countermeasure to Canada’s 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.

In addition to canola seed, duties have also been placed on various other Canadian goods such as canola oil and meal, peas, pork, and certain seafood items, following Canada’s tariffs on Chinese imports like steel and aluminum.

Moe asserted that Canada should adopt a genuine and pragmatic attitude in its engagements with China.

“If Canada is genuinely focused on securing, diversifying, and expanding markets globally, we must engage with China earnestly,” Moe remarked in a social media post.

He visited China himself in September, alongside federal officials, in a bid to resolve the persistent trade dispute.

Prime Minister Carney is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. This visit will be a landmark occasion, being the first official trip to China by a Canadian prime minister in over eight years, symbolizing a pivotal moment in Canada–China relations.
