Renowned American actress Sally Kirkland, celebrated for her Oscar-nominated role in 1987's Anna, has passed away at the age of 84. Her representative Michael Greene reported that she succumbed to her ailments on Tuesday morning at a hospice in Palm Springs, California.

Kirkland faced numerous health struggles in recent months. Earlier this fall, friends initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her medical costs following multiple fractures in her neck, wrist, and hip. Complications during her recovery required further hospitalization and rehabilitation.

A Diverse Career in Film, Television, and Theatre

Born in New York City, Kirkland was introduced to the arts early on, influenced by her mother, a fashion editor for Vogue. She began modelling at just five years old, later studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts under the guidance of esteemed mentors like Philip Burton and Lee Strasberg.

Kirkland’s breakthrough came with Andy Warhol's 1964 short film, 13 Most Beautiful Women, which garnered her attention in the New York art community. Over the next six decades, she built a diverse acting portfolio, participating in stage plays, television series, and over 200 films.

Highlights of a Hollywood Career

Kirkland's extensive filmography includes notable roles in:

  • The Sting (1973) with Robert Redford and Paul Newman

  • The Way We Were featuring Barbra Streisand

  • JFK by Oliver Stone

  • Revenge with Kevin Costner

  • Cold Feet alongside Keith Carradine and Tom Waits

  • Bruce Almighty with Jim Carrey

  • EDtv directed by Ron Howard

  • Heatwave opposite Cicely Tyson

  • High Stakes alongside Kathy Bates

She also featured in the TV film The Haunted in 1991, which chronicled a real-life ghost story, and made a cameo in Mel Brooks' iconic comedy Blazing Saddles.

Critical Acclaim for Anna

Kirkland's most notable performance was in the film Anna, where she played a fading Czech actress seeking a fresh start in America while mentoring a younger actress portrayed by Paulina Porizkova. This role earned her critical acclaim, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award nomination.

A photo from the Golden Globe Awards in 1988 captures Kirkland with Michael Douglas, each holding their respective trophies for Anna and Wall Street.

Television and Stage Achievements

Her television credits are vast, with roles in Criminal Minds, Roseanne, and Charlie’s Angels, among others. On stage, she was involved in Terrence McNally’s off-Broadway play Sweet Eros, as well as Shakespearean productions like A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Reflecting on her affection for classical theatre, Kirkland once stated,

“An actor can only claim the title if they’ve worked with Shakespeare; it speaks volumes in their performances — in breath, in strength, in mastery of poetic language.”

A Life Spent in Service and Spirituality

Kirkland was deeply involved in humanitarian efforts and spirituality, taking part in various New Age movements. She conducted Insight Transformational Seminars and was an active member of the Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, focusing on soul transcendence.

Throughout her life, she contributed to numerous social causes, including advocating for AIDS, cancer, and heart disease patients, as well as feeding the homeless through the American Red Cross.

Bold Artistic Choices

Kirkland was known for her fearless artistic decisions. One of her early films, Futz (1969), became infamous for a scene where she rode nude on a pig, drawing mixed reviews. Time magazine famously labelled her “the latter-day Isadora Duncan of nudothespianism” due to her unyielding commitment to both performance and activism.

In her latter years, she continued to appear in film and at events, her last notable appearance being at the 2015 premiere of Love & Mercy, where she greeted fans with a bright smile.

From childhood modelling to climbing the heights of Hollywood, Sally Kirkland’s legacy speaks of unbridled passion and dedication to her craft. Her artistic depth and humanitarian spirit will inspire many generations to come.

She will be remembered as a fearless artist and spiritual seeker whose impact on the world and art transcends borders.
