The Saskatchewan Roughriders secured first place in the CFL’s West Division with a 27-19 victory over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday. The win improves Saskatchewan’s record to 12-4 and ensures the Riders will host the West Division final in Regina on Nov. 8. Toronto, already eliminated from playoff contention, fell to 5-12.
Late-Game Drama Seals the Win
With four minutes remaining, the Argos failed on a third-down gamble at the Saskatchewan 25-yard line, giving the Riders possession. Slotback Samuel Emilus made a spectacular 44-yard catch along the sideline to advance the drive.
Toronto appeared to stop Saskatchewan on another crucial third-down at their own 34-yard line with 2:30 left, but a successful coach’s challenge by Saskatchewan head coach Corey Mace overturned the spot. Four plays later, kicker Brett Lauther secured the win with a 14-yard field goal, his fifth of the game.
Strong Start for the Riders
The Riders jumped out to an early lead, scoring a touchdown on their first possession. Quarterback Trevor Harris connected with Joe Robustelli on a 12-yard touchdown pass to give Saskatchewan a 6-1 lead. A two-point conversion attempt failed when Robustelli dropped the pass.
The remainder of the first half saw a battle between the kickers. Lauther added three field goals for Saskatchewan, while Toronto’s Liram Hajrullahu hit two. Harris finished the half 15-of-18 passing for 215 yards, including big completions of 50 yards to Emilus and 44 yards to Robustelli.
Toronto’s Quarterback Woes
Argos quarterback Jarret Doege, starting for the injured Nick Arbuckle, struggled in the second quarter. After hitting his head on the turf during a tackle, Doege was removed for evaluation. He returned briefly but was later replaced by Tucker Horn before resuming play in the second half.
Back-and-Forth Third Quarter
Toronto forced the game’s first turnover early in the third quarter when Aaron Casey stripped the ball from Riders running back A.J. Ouellette. On the next play, Dejon Brissett caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Doege, bringing Toronto within two points at 15-13 after a failed two-point attempt.
The Riders quickly responded with a 72-yard drive, capped by a 13-yard Harris-to-Tommy Nield touchdown pass. Another failed two-point conversion left the score at 21-13. Hajrullahu cut the deficit to 21-16 with his third field goal, but Lauther’s fourth field goal restored Saskatchewan’s eight-point lead in the early fourth quarter.
Final Stretch
Hajrullahu’s fourth field goal at the 12-minute mark brought Toronto to 24-19, but Lauther’s late kick sealed the Riders’ victory and cemented their top spot in the West Division.
