In a significant move, Roblox is enhancing its safety protocols by prohibiting children from chatting with adult strangers on the platform. This decision marks a pivotal change for the gaming giant, which boasts over 80 million daily users, nearly half of whom are under 13 years old.
Beginning in December for locations such as Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, the update will enforce mandatory age validation for all chat-enabled accounts. Following that, the rest of the world will fall under this regulation starting in January, positioning Roblox as the first major gaming platform to implement facial age verification for chat functionalities.
The new process requires users to perform a camera-based age assessment in the Roblox app. The technology is designed to provide age estimates within a one- to two-year accuracy margin for users aged five to 25. After verification, players are classified into age groups—under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. Communication will only be permitted between individuals in similar age nodes, barring those who add each other as “trusted connections” to enhance interaction among acquaintances.
For those under 13, stricter protections will continue. Many chat features and direct messaging capabilities will remain inaccessible unless enabled by a parent. Roblox emphasizes that such measures are essential to deter adult contact with younger players, a growing concern among families and regulatory bodies alike.
Over the years, Roblox has faced mounting pressure to address child safety; currently, it is embroiled in lawsuits across Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana, alleging exposure of minors to predatory risks. Previous investigations indicated that a 27-year-old could easily exchange messages with a 15-year-old via separate devices, illuminating deficiencies in safety enforcement.
The privacy aspect surrounding this update is crucial. Roblox assures users that all images utilized for age verification will be processed by a third-party provider and deleted promptly post-validation. Parents will retain control to manage or modify their child’s information after the age verification process.
Roblox’s announcement coincides with increased global scrutiny, particularly in Australia, where steps are being taken to ban social media for users under 16. Advocacy groups are mounting pressure on gaming platforms to bolster protections. Recently, a virtual demonstration within Roblox attracted attention, as over 12,000 users signed a petition advocating for safer gaming features.
With this latest initiative, Roblox aims to foster age-appropriate gaming experiences while minimizing the risk of adult interactions with vulnerable young users. These changes are pivotal as the company endeavors to restore trust and adhere to tightening online safety regulations worldwide.
