A court in Quebec has found Kamaljit Arora guilty of murder after he drowned his two children at their family home in Laval in October 2022. The shocking case has drawn attention across Canada due to its tragic nature and serious charges.
The 49-year-old man was convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of his 11-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter. Their identities have not been made public due to a legal ban. The jury also found him guilty of attempting to kill his eldest daughter and for attacking his wife, Rama Rani Arora, who survived the incident.
During the trial, Kamaljit Arora admitted that he had drowned his two younger children. However, his lawyers argued that the crime was not planned in advance and said he was suffering from severe depression. They claimed his mental health had worsened since it was first diagnosed in 2020.
On the other hand, the prosecution told the court that the evidence showed a clear and planned act. They argued that the father had carefully carried out the crime.
With the first-degree murder conviction, Kamaljit Arora now faces an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years. The court will hear more arguments in May before deciding the punishment for the other charges.
This case has left the local community in shock and raised concerns about mental health and family safety.
