The US military confirmed that six crew members were killed when a KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft crashed over western Iraq near Turaibil, close to the Iraqi-Jordanian border. Those on board were John Klinner, Ariana Savino, Ashley Pruitt, Seth Koval, Curtis Angst, and Tyler Simmons. The first three served in the US Air Force, while the latter three were members of the National Guard.
The aircraft was on a combat refuelling mission when it went down, while a second plane involved in the operation landed safely. Officials stated that neither hostile nor friendly fire was involved, although a midair collision remains under investigation. The incident underscores the inherent risks of aerial operations in the region.
The crash is the latest in a series of US military losses during ongoing operations and highlights the importance of the KC-135 Stratotanker in enabling extended air missions for combat aircraft. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth hailed the crew as “American heroes” for their service during the mission.
