During the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Istanbul, Turkey, member parliaments came together to unanimously endorse a pivotal resolution put forth by Qatar, along with several partners.

This resolution addresses the urgent necessity for harmonized parliamentary endeavors to back ceasefire initiatives and advance peace not only in the Middle East but globally. It underscores the increasing significance of diplomatic roles taken by parliaments in sustaining worldwide peace and stability.

Qatar’s Shura Council introduced the proposal, which garnered substantial backing and was formally adopted into the Assembly's agenda. This notable event marks the first instance of an emergency item from an Arab nation obtaining sufficient votes for discussion within the IPU General Assembly—an impactful diplomatic milestone.

Leading the delegation, Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim played a crucial role in the discussions under the theme, “Promoting hope, preserving peace, and ensuring justice for future generations.”

In the Governing Council session, Deputy Speaker Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti emphasized Qatar’s global developmental contributions. She highlighted a parliamentary forum held in Doha during the Second World Summit for Social Development that focused on the significance of investing in human capital and the responsibilities of lawmakers in fostering social progress.

Key issues raised included enhancing the IPU’s functional strategies, addressing digital violence, and countering misinformation aimed at women in political roles. She advocated for robust legislation to protect women and promote safe political engagement.

Qatar’s delegation actively engaged in various standing committee meetings, discussing crucial topics such as democracy, human rights, United Nations matters, and sustainable development, reinforcing the essential role of parliaments in addressing worldwide challenges.

The concluding “Istanbul Declaration” recognized the vital role of youth in decision-making processes, the empowerment of women, and the ethical utilization of contemporary technologies like artificial intelligence. It urged for enhanced international collaboration and turning commitments into actionable legislative frameworks.

In summary, the Assembly reiterated the fundamental need for unity, dialogue, and parliamentary teamwork in the quest for enduring global peace.
