Qatar's Shura Council is currently taking part in the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the 217th Governing Council meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye. Led by HE Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, this five-day session kicked off on Wednesday.
The assembly, themed “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations,” emphasizes the critical need for global cooperation in tackling contemporary international challenges.
This year's gathering is set against a backdrop of intricate geopolitical dynamics, necessitating thorough and diverse parliamentary approaches. Central discussions include international peace and security, efforts towards building an equitable and sustainable global economy, and the enhanced role of parliaments in post-conflict governance.
Key topics on the agenda address significant areas like social justice, inclusive development, and the advancement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There is particular attention to social inclusion and empowering individuals with disabilities as part of global development priorities.
During the main event, HE Speaker Al Ghanim also engaged in the Gulf parliamentary meeting and an Arab parliamentary coordination meeting in Istanbul on Tuesday. These discussions aimed to boost collaboration among GCC legislative bodies and align priorities on crucial IPU agenda items.
The Arab coordination meeting tackled significant issues, such as nominations for the IPU Secretary-General, addressing committee vacancies, and considering a proposed emergency agenda item. Participants also sought to unify Arab viewpoints on various global parliamentary matters.
Moreover, HE Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council and IPU Executive Committee member, provided a comprehensive briefing at the Arab group meeting, discussing the committee’s activities and progress since the last General Assembly while focusing on enhancing parliamentary collaboration.
Qatar’s Shura Council’s involvement highlights its dedication to fostering international dialogue and cooperation, as well as promoting peace and sustainable development through parliamentary diplomacy.
