Actor Priyanka Chopra, who lives in New York City with her husband Nick Jonas and their daughter Malti Marie, took to Instagram to applaud a landmark moment in the city’s politics. Zohran Mamdani has been elected New York City’s 111th mayor, making history as the youngest person and the first Muslim to assume the office at 34 years old.

Sharing a screen capture of Zohran speaking to supporters after his win, Priyanka wrote a message of congratulations on her Instagram Story, also congratulating filmmaker Mira Nair. Zohran is the son of celebrated director Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Zohran’s family later lived in Cape Town, South Africa, before settling in New York. He attended The Bronx High School of Science and went on to Bowdoin College, where he completed a degree in Africana Studies. Before winning the mayoralty, he served as a member of the New York State Assembly.

Priyanka has called New York home since 2016, when she moved here to film her American TV debut on Quantico. It was during her time in the city that her relationship with singer-actor Nick Jonas deepened — he proposed in Crete in 2018 — and the couple later married in an opulent multi-day ceremony at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace, blending Christian and Hindu rites.

She has spoken fondly of their apartment’s views and how the city’s light stirs her creativity. Describing the living room outlook over the skyline and the Hudson, Priyanka has said the changing colours at sunset have become a quiet ritual that grounds and inspires her.

Zohran Mamdani’s victory is seen as a significant shift in New York politics — a moment that highlights the city’s evolving diversity and rising young leadership. Priyanka Chopra’s public recognition of the milestone underscores the way global public figures are engaging with civic life in their adopted communities.
