Pope Leo XIV Criticizes Europe’s Military Expansion

Pope Leo XIV has strongly criticized Europe’s growing military expansion, calling the continent’s increasing defence buildup a “betrayal” of diplomacy and peaceful international cooperation. His comments come at a time when several European countries are rapidly increasing military spending because of rising security tensions, geopolitical conflicts, and concerns over regional stability.

Speaking during a public address at the Vatican City, Pope Leo XIV warned that prioritizing military growth over diplomatic solutions could deepen global instability and weaken international trust between nations. The Pope said peace cannot be achieved only through weapons and military alliances, arguing that dialogue and negotiation must remain the foundation of international relations.

According to Vatican officials, the Pope expressed concern that Europe is moving toward a “dangerous culture of confrontation” instead of strengthening diplomatic institutions and humanitarian cooperation.
