Kerala finds itself at the center of a political storm following the recitation of the complete version of the national anthem, “Vande Mataram,” at the recent Congress-led UDF Cabinet swearing-in. This act swiftly led to a fiery exchange between Leftist parties and the BJP, with accusations of using nationalism and secularism as political tools flying in both directions.
Members of the CPIM voiced strong opposition to the full rendition, labeling it as unsuitable for a nation characterized by its diversity and secularism. They contended that only the authorized opening lines of “Vande Mataram” should feature in government ceremonies, adhering to the historical consensus of national leaders and the Constituents Assembly.
CPI leader Binoy Viswam reiterated that the past decisions to limit the song were intended to safeguard the secular identity of India. He expressed concerns regarding specific sections of the song that, he believes, contain religious references that conflict with the inclusive values championed by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
The situation escalated when the BJP accused Left parties of belittling the national song to gain favor with extremist factions. BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized Communist ideologies, claiming they lack comprehension of Indian customs and heritage, and charged that the Left's actions amounted to political appeasement concerning “Vande Mataram.”
Meanwhile, individuals within the newly established Kerala government reportedly sought to distance themselves from the conflict, emphasizing that Lok Bhavan authorities had organized the event. Insiders asserted that there had been no intention of political signaling associated with the full recital during the oath-taking event.
Interestingly, the CPIM highlighted that even some BJP-led states refrain from presenting the full version of “Vande Mataram” at official gatherings. The party cautioned that such moves could erode the secular fabric of the nation and foster unwarranted divisions among communities.
This topic has sparked a broader political dialogue across Kerala, with social media users and political figures engaged in discussions concerning nationalism, constitutional conventions, and the intersection of religion in public ceremonies. The ramifications of this controversy are likely to persist as a significant theme in the ongoing political discourse.
