Dubai kicked off the 28th Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge with a bang as Croatia's young talent Petra Marcinko continued her impressive form, defeating Slovak veteran Viktoria Hruncakova 6-4, 6-1. Turning 20 this week, Marcinko exhibited remarkable skill and focus, wrapping up the match in just 75 minutes on court No. 1.

The tournament experienced shocking early exits with top seed Dalma Galfi forced to retire against qualifier Tereza Martincova after trailing 1-2 in the second set due to a foot injury. Meanwhile, former doubles world No. 1 Kristina Mladenovic suffered a fast defeat, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Alevtina Ibragimova in a swift 73-minute match.

The excitement continued with 16-year-old British prodigy Mika Stojsavljevic, fresh from her junior US Open victory, defeating Valentina Ryser 6-4, 6-3, and setting up a meeting with third seed Sinja Kraus. At the same time, Ibragimova will face sixth seed Linda Fruhvirtova in the upcoming round.

Having recently claimed the Fujairah W75 title and the 2022 Australian Open junior championship, Marcinko highlighted the significance of maintaining momentum with the Australian Open approaching. While she acknowledged Hruncakova's challenge, her composure during pivotal moments stood out as key to her success.

The first set turned into a closely fought battle, with both players trading breaks. Hruncakova's errors, including double faults, enabled Marcinko to seize a slight edge. The Croatian then accelerated in the second set, achieving two quick breaks and keeping her lead firm to secure the win. Next, she is set to meet Britain's Harriet Dart, who dominated Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama 6-1, 6-1.

While Tereza Martincova advanced due to Galfi's injury, she expressed a mix of emotions regarding her progression, acknowledging the unfortunate situation for her fellow athlete.

With high-profile exits already marking the tournament's unpredictable nature, the spotlight now shines on emerging talents, leaving fans eager to see who will take advantage of the unfolding opportunities.
