OpenAI Welcomes Sky Team to Shape ChatGPT as a Mac Desktop Companion

In a step toward tighter desktop integration, OpenAI has bought Software Applications Incorporated, the small studio behind Sky — a natural-language interface built specifically for Mac. The move is intended to bring ChatGPT out of the browser and into people’s everyday desktop workflows.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, announced the deal and praised Sky as a carefully designed desktop AI experience. Sky lets users write, plan, code and manage tasks with simple language, while also understanding what’s on the screen to act as a practical co‑worker for macOS.

OpenAI confirmed the entire Sky team will join the company, bringing hands-on macOS expertise to improve ChatGPT’s desktop presence. Turley said the acquisition will speed up OpenAI’s plan to weave AI into the tools people use daily, suggesting closer links with native Mac applications.

Sky was developed by a compact, design-driven group led by Ari Weinstein, noted for building intuitive automation interfaces. Weinstein framed Sky as a friendly assistant that stays above the desktop to support thinking and creativity, aiming to make interactions with computers more natural and collaborative.

The agreement was led by Turley and Fidji Simo and was approved by OpenAI’s independent Transaction and Audit Committees. An investment fund connected to Sam Altman previously held a passive stake in Software Applications Incorporated.

With Sky now part of OpenAI, users can expect ChatGPT to evolve from a conversational tool into a more active desktop companion, helping across multiple apps and tasks in real time — a notable step toward making AI a seamless part of everyday computing.
