Eli Lilly's Mounjaro has surged to become the top-selling medication in India for October, achieving ₹100 crore ($11.38 million) in sales in just one month. Launched in March 2025, this drug has quickly gained traction among consumers. Mounjaro's ascension indicates a heightened demand for effective treatments addressing diabetes and obesity among the Indian population. A 2023 study published in The Lancet reveals that approximately 101 million people, or 11.4 percent, suffer from diabetes in India.
This injectable medication is aimed at individuals with type 2 diabetes who are either overweight or obese. It functions by influencing two key hormones—GLP-1 and GIP—which are instrumental in regulating blood sugar levels and appetite. Medical professionals indicate that Mounjaro promotes gradual and sustainable weight loss by reducing hunger and delaying digestion.
Since its introduction, Mounjaro has significantly outperformed its rival Wegovy, released by Novo Nordisk in June. In October alone, Mounjaro's consumption in India was an astonishing tenfold compared to Wegovy. Since its launch, the drug has amassed ₹333 crore in revenue. Research also indicates that tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, may facilitate more substantial weight loss than semaglutide, marketed as Ozempic.
Experts highlight that while Mounjaro offers promising results, it is not an instant fix for everyone. Medical supervision is essential, particularly for those with diabetes or other health issues. The drug's success underscores an increasing necessity for treatments capable of addressing both weight and blood sugar management in India. With the prevalence of diabetes and obesity on the rise, Mounjaro is becoming a crucial element of the nation's healthcare strategy.
The growing popularity of Mounjaro also reflects a broader public consciousness regarding health, as more individuals are open to exploring alternatives that can enhance their quality of life. Nevertheless, healthcare professionals emphasize the importance of lifestyle modifications—such as a nutritious diet, regular physical activity, and balanced nutrition—in conjunction with any medication.
The swift success of Mounjaro signifies a transformative shift in India, where there is a significant appetite for advanced therapies targeting obesity and diabetes, revealing a collective desire for safe and effective solutions to chronic health challenges.
