Canadian actor Michael J. Fox has shared his transformative journey living with Parkinson’s disease, as his foundation celebrates 25 years of impactful work. In a recent interview, the 64-year-old actor talked about his personal experiences and the widespread contributions of his advocacy efforts.

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991 at 29, initially keeping it under wraps for seven years as he processed the news. Parkinson’s, a progressive disorder impacting the central nervous system, affects motor functions, leading to tremors, stiffness, and other debilitating symptoms. Although irreversible, there are treatments that can help manage these symptoms. Parkinson’s complications, including falls and pneumonia, pose serious risks.

In 2000, Fox established the Michael J. Fox Foundation, aiming to accelerate research into a cure and enhance therapies for those living with the disease. Since its foundation, over $2.5 billion has been mobilized for this cause. Fox underscores that his motivation transcends personal accolades; it’s about uplifting families and individuals battling Parkinson’s, alongside fostering advancements in the field.

Reflecting on his early stint in acting, Fox recalled the rigors of shooting Family Ties and Back to the Future, often running on just three to four hours of sleep each night as he balanced multiple projects at the young age of 23.

Fox was honest about the physical challenges he has faced due to Parkinson’s, including injuries and a benign spinal tumor diagnosis. He described living with Parkinson’s as a “gift that keeps on taking,” acknowledging daily hurdles while highlighting gratitude and optimism as necessary coping strategies.

Though he retired from acting in 2020, Fox recently revealed plans to guest star in an episode of the upcoming series Shrinking in 2026. His humanitarian efforts were recognized when he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in November 2023, an honorary Oscar recognizing significant charitable contributions within the film industry.

Over the years, Fox has emerged as a prominent advocate for Parkinson’s awareness, striving to diminish stigma and embodying hope for millions worldwide affected by the condition. The remarkable achievements of his foundation emphasize the urgency for continued research and support for those facing this challenging disease.
