On April 15, 2026, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, President of Turkmenistan, met with Martin Brugy, the newly inducted Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy, in the capital city of Ashgabat.
During this meeting, Ambassador Brugy formally presented his credentials and expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the chance to represent Italy in Turkmenistan. He also relayed warm wishes from Italian President Sergio Mattarella to President Berdimuhamedov.
In response, President Berdimuhamedov congratulated the ambassador on his recent appointment and extended his best wishes for fostering strong bilateral ties. He also conveyed greetings to President Mattarella, emphasizing Turkmenistan's dedication to nurturing diplomatic relationships.
The discussion underscored the significance of Turkmenistan's cooperation with European Union nations, highlighting Italy's pivotal role. Both parties acknowledged the fruitful collaboration within global entities such as the United Nations, the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
Attention was also focused on expanding joint initiatives across various sectors, notably in trade, economy, energy, transport, logistics, and agriculture. Energy collaboration was a key focus, with prominent Italian companies actively participating in large-scale projects in Turkmenistan.
Particularly, the ambassador and president discussed Eni's significant involvement in Turkmenistan’s energy sector, showcasing successful large-scale initiatives.
Transport and logistics emerged as crucial areas for partnership, as Turkmenistan is enhancing international transport corridors like the North-South and East-West routes, which boost regional and global connectivity.
Lastly, the conversation highlighted the importance of cultural, educational, and scientific collaboration, reflecting a growing interest in Italian culture and academic exchanges that strengthen relations between the two countries.
Ambassador Brugy reiterated Italy's acknowledgment of Turkmenistan as a trustworthy and neutral associate, expressing his eagerness to enhance diplomatic relations throughout his term.
