Mattson Tomlin Imagines Tobey Maguire as a Father in a New Spider-Man Film

More than twenty years after Tobey Maguire first swung through Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man, the idea of him returning to the role has resurfaced. Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin — who is also attached to The Batman: Part II — has signalled interest in developing a Spider-Man 4 centered on Maguire’s older Peter Parker.

Tomlin’s Picture of a Mature Peter Parker

In a recent exchange on X (formerly Twitter), Tomlin replied to a fan asking about his ties to the Spider-Man universe.

“To be honest, my main inclination at the moment would be to write a Spider-Man 4 in which Tobey’s Spider-Man is navigating life as a husband and a dad,” he said.

Tomlin added that he’s drawn to stories that present Spider-Man in a family context, noting that a parental angle feels timely after the franchise’s recent chapters.

His comments have reignited hopes among viewers for a return by Maguire, whose brief but memorable reappearance alongside Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) remains a high point for the series’ multiversal storytelling.

Could Spider-Man 4 Move Forward?

When pressed about whether any real progress has been made toward a new Maguire-led film, Tomlin offered an encouraging but cautious reply.

“Slow and steady wins the race,” he wrote, adding that any move forward would require many people, agreements and fortunate circumstances — and that there hasn’t been a definitive refusal on his end.

There’s no official confirmation from Tobey Maguire or Sam Raimi, but Tomlin’s remarks have fuelled speculation that studios might explore continuing the spirit of Raimi’s trilogy or launching a standalone tale of an experienced Peter Parker juggling hero work with family life.

Tom Holland’s Next: Brand New Day

Meanwhile, Tom Holland remains scheduled to lead the MCU’s next Spider-Man instalment. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set for release on July 31, 2026.

Zendaya is expected to return as MJ, and Holland has described the project as a fresh chapter for his Peter following the upheaval of No Way Home.

Tomlin’s Other Work

Tomlin is also working on The Batman: Part II, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, which is pencilled in for October 2027.

Given his growing footprint in superhero cinema, Tomlin’s interest in Maguire’s Spider-Man could prompt studios to explore multiverse connections or new directions — especially if fan enthusiasm proves strong.

For now, there is no formal announcement of a Tobey Maguire-led project. Still, Tomlin’s comments have stirred fresh online conversation.

Whether it emerges as a straight sequel, a multiverse crossover, or a standalone story, audiences are clearly curious to see Maguire’s Peter Parker again — older, wiser and balancing life beyond the mask.
