Malaysia Enhances Border Security with Weaponry Plans

In a move to bolster the security of its border personnel, Malaysia is set to equip the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) with firearms, including pistols and tasers, particularly in light of a recent shooting incident. Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail disclosed that the Cabinet has preliminarily approved equipping AKPS with suitable armaments. This decision follows extensive dialogues on enhancing the security and operational efficiency of border enforcement teams.

This decision comes on the heels of a shooting incident in February at Bukit Kayu Hitam, near the Malaysia-Thailand border, where AKPS officer Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir narrowly escaped injury during a morning drive. The attack brings to light the hazards that border officers encounter.

Officials assert that border officers routinely face perilous scenarios linked to smuggling and cross-border offenses, making the addition of defensive equipment vital for their safety and operational efficacy.
