In an effort to tackle fuel supply issues and diminish reliance on fossil fuels, the Malaysian government has revealed plans to elevate the biodiesel blend from B10 to B15. This initiative is crucial for managing the current energy landscape.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir confirmed that the transition will kick off with a blend of B12, taking advantage of the existing infrastructure, which means no additional expenses will be incurred.
This decision comes in light of ongoing global energy fluctuations due to conflicts in West Asia, which have unsettled fuel markets and raised issues regarding supply continuity.
Recent figures indicate that Malaysia produced 975,207 metric tonnes of biodiesel in 2025, with a total production capacity reaching 2.36 million metric tonnes, showcasing the national capability to accommodate higher biodiesel blends.
The government perceives biodiesel as a timely and effective means to reduce fossil fuel dependency. Authorities noted that with the current supply chains, blending facilities, and infrastructure established, the transition can be conducted systematically.
Additionally, increasing biodiesel adoption is expected to prolong the country’s diesel reserves. Future developments include enhancing facilities to support even higher blends like B20 and B30, especially for commercial and public usage.
The government is committed to collaborating with industry stakeholders for a seamless implementation. They will also keep a close watch on global trends while striving for a more durable and sustainable energy framework.
