Lucy Liu Takes Center Stage in 'Rosemead' as a Leading Star

American actress Lucy Liu, well-known for her iconic roles in films like Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill, and the series Elementary, is embracing her inaugural major dramatic leading role in the film Rosemead. After almost 30 years in the industry, she has come to realize the scarcity of serious roles available to her.

Expressing her astonishment at finally landing a lead role, Liu remarked, “I just haven’t had any opportunities to tap into it. It’s kind of wild to think that after more than 30 years, this is my first leading role like this.”

She candidly discussed the stereotypes and biases encountered during her career, recalling criticism she received for embodying the “Dragon Lady” stereotype in Kill Bill (2003) and questioning why others don’t face the same level of scrutiny.

Liu noted that appearance-driven assumptions have limited her career prospects, stating, “I cannot turn myself into someone who appears Caucasian, but had I been able to, my opportunities would have significantly increased.”

Despite the industry’s flaws, her love for storytelling is undiminished. “The system has many issues, but that doesn't lessen my belief in the magic of filmmaking,” she reflected, crediting her early success in Hollywood for her lasting passion.

In Rosemead, Liu portrays Irene, a Chinese immigrant dealing with her son's mental health struggles. This film, adapted from a 2017 article, is notable as her first project as both a lead actor and producer. The film debuted at the Tribeca Festival on June 6 and is slated for a U.S. release on December 5.
